Samford University hosted two special annual events last night, Hanging of the Green and Lighting of the Way.

The two organizations that helped plan these events were University Ministries and SGA.

The first event of the evening was Hanging of the Green.

Caroline Noland who is a senior non-profit management major and president of University Ministries narrated the ceremony.

Noland and senior religion Andrew Toney led those in attendance in the reading of the Christmas Story.

University Chorale and the Bells of Buchanan provided Christmas music throughout the service.

In addition to music and worship, 15 seniors were honored for their service and dedication to Samford. This year’s honorees were Whitney Head, Elizabeth Gettys, Caroline Noland, Kara Peal, Stephanie Smith, Rachel Snyder, Mary Evelyn Todd, Alyson Torbett, Adam Frew, Matt Hester, Larry McCutcheon, Trevor Starnes, Andrew Toney, Matt Wambles and Riley Dyer.

“Realizing that I’m getting ready to leave Samford,” Noland said, “and that I’m one of the seniors is a really neat and humbling experience.”

After Hanging of the Green students transitioned to the quad for Lighting of the Way. The event included the singing of Christmas carols led by the University Ministries choir as well as the reading of the Christmas Story by Dr. Jeanna Westmoreland and the lighting of the Christmas tree.

After the lighting of the tree, SGA held a concert in Ben Brown Plaza featuring the band Act of Congress. During the show members of SGA sold t-shirts, passed out buttons and served hot chocolate.

Lighting of the Way provides a great opportuntiy for students to come together and celebrate the Christmas Season.

“Lighting of the Way in general is a good event for Samford,” junior political science Weathers Veazey said. “It’s a great Samford tradition that is fun and unifying for our campus.”
