Western Conference rivals the Memphis Grizzlies and Minnesota Timberwolves have experienced contrasting fortunes in the opening weeks of the season.

The ‘grit and grind’ Grizzlies, led by point guard Mike Conley and center Marc Gasol, have quietly accumulated wins to sit at 8-5, good for a berth in the West playoff slots at this early stage of the campaign.

The Timberwolves have endured a turbulent opening month, losing all five games on a Western road swing as the Jimmy Butler trade saga rumbled on.

That losing streak was the trigger for the team to ship Butler to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Dario Saric, Robert Covington and Jerryd Bayless.

Since the Butler trade, the T’Wolves have ripped off two home wins with star man Karl-Anthony Towns returning to fine scoring and rebounding form.
