Man Utd ‘struggling to make Europa League’ and ‘million miles off top four’, claims Gary Neville

MANCHESTER UNITED are ‘a million miles’ away from making the top four this year, and are even struggling to qualify for the Europa League – according to Old Trafford legend Gary Neville.

Neville – part of United’s famous treble-winning side of 1998-99 – made the scathing judgement on his former club after watching their rivals Arsenal beat Spurs in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon.

He told Sky Sports’ Gary Neville Podcast: “If you are Manchester United, where are you at?

“Watching them last night [in their 2-2 draw at Southampton], they look a million miles away from [Arsenal and Tottenham].

“United are in a massive battle to get into the top four, (or) even the Europa League places at the moment.”

The Red Devils have had a mixed bag of a season so far which sees them in seventh spot in the Premier League – a massive sixteen points behind their neighbours Manchester City.

They’re also eight points behind Tottenham, who lie in fifth, and have several clubs on a similar number of points threatening their chances of European qualification for next season.

United now face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening, but Neville said that the Gunners’ win against Spurs provided a warning for Jose Mourinho’s men in the run-up to that match.

He said: “United have got to prove – a lot more than they have so far this season – that they can compete with this Arsenal team.

"Old Trafford is always a difficult place to go, so it wouldn't surprise me if Manchester United won on Wednesday night – however what they’ll now recognise is that they have had a warning today from Arsenal.”

United fought back from a two-goal deficit to salvage a draw at St Mary’s, but their form remains unconvincing – and reports of a dressing room spat between Mourinho and Paul Pogba seems unlikely to help matters.

Arsenal go into the game on the back of a 19-match unbeaten run and three wins on the bounce as confidence grows under new manager Unai Emery.
