But he will not take charge of Saints’ relegation fight until the weekend, when his new team travel to survival rivals Cardiff.

Hasenhuttl, 51, has been in talks to succeed sacked boss Mark Hughes and the formalities are almost complete.

The ex-RB Leipzig man will bring in his own coaching staff as assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left.

Southampton looked to the Bundesliga for Sparky’s replacement with the influence of Canadian-born German chairman Ralph Krueger.

And Hasenhuttl’s coaching, working under a director of football, made him an ideal candidate after catching the eye working with youngsters at Leipzig.

He will be given players to boost his squad in the January transfer window but it will be director of football operations Ross Wilson who has the big say on who arrives at St Mary’s.

Hasenhuttl will give a positive report on working with Everton winger Ademola Lookman last season at Leipzig – but it will be down to Wilson to recruit the players for the coach to work with.

Ex-Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis will be in charge for the Spurs game as the relegation-threatened club look to build on the draw against Manchester United in Hughes’ last game in charge.

Davis said: "I have got some time period between now and the game and also it's not about drumming things into them and psyching them up and trying to make them too different from what they are.

"It's just me trying to give a bit more of my personality to what I'm asking them to do.

"Technically I think we have got fantastic players. There has obviously been something missing that hasn't been turning those draws into wins.

"Maybe I can add that little bit extra and if we see a little bit of that it might be the difference that gets us the points we need."
