Jose Mourinho slams Man Utd’s leaky defence ahead of Fulham clash in pre-match programme notes

JOSE MOURINHO has again blasted Manchester United's leaky defence in his pre-match programme notes ahead of their clash with Fulham.

The Red Devils manager has moaned that his players "keep shooting themselves" in the foot with mishaps, as happened in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Wednesday.

Mourinho, 55, has been constantly critical of his team's defending this season, after the club decided not to let him buy a new centre back over the summer.

United have conceded 25 Premier League goals and only Huddersfield (26), Southampton (29), Cardiff (30), Burnley (32) and today's opponents Fulham (36) have let in more than his side.

This is the same squad that finished second last term, letting in 28 goals the whole season.

He wrote in the United Review: "The problem is, you don't always get the result your performance deserves when you give away goals like we have been giving away. We saw that again on Wednesday.

JOSE MOURINHO also praised the players' team spirit after the Arsenal game.

In his programme notes he made clear the heart and spirit he wants from his stars after dropping Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku in the Gunners draw.

United came from behind twice to get the tie with the Gunners, who are undefeated in 20 games.

He said: "I was naturally pleased to see the spirit in the team and the spirit from the fans to give the players the encouragement they needed.

"We have now gone four games without defeat, and we keep showing our commitment and bravery to fight for the cause.

"It is hard for me to be to be too upset, however, when the boys are giving everything.

"On Wednesday we saw players playing with injuries, players doing well after hardly starting games until now, players leaving the field with no energy left, so the commitment and passion is there."

"We were up against a very good Arsenal team who have been unbeaten for most of the season, but we didn't give ourselves the best chance of ending that run because we made two big mistakes which allowed them to take the lead both times.

"This was not just the case against Arsenal, of course.

"Time after time this season, we have made things hard for ourselves with our mistakes, which is a big part of the reason we are where we are in the Premier League table.

"We have had bad luck at times to, as well as injuries, but we have to stop hurting ourselves if we want to achieve what we want."
