While Samford was on summer vacation this year, three sororities travelled to their conventions to receive prestigious awards and acknowledgements. National convention is a time for both collegiate and alumnae members of the sorority to come together and make contacts as well as interact with fellow sisters and national area officers. Zeta Tau Alpha, Phi Mu and Alpha Delta Pi illustrated the many accomplishments and endeavors that Samford’s Greek Life strives for throughout the year.
The Delta Psi chapter of Zeta Tau Alpha on Samford University’s campus received many prestigious awards this summer at the 2012 Zeta Tau Alpha National Convention in Louisville, KY in June. The chapter won Academic Achievement, Founder’s Club, and Crown Chapter. The Academic Achievement award recognizes the chapter’s attainment of highest level of academic achievement for at least two semesters. The members of Delta Psi pride themselves on academic integrity by holding each other accountable with study groups and rewards for great grades. Delta Psi earned the Founder’s Club award due to their donation of over $25,000 for Breast Cancer Education and Awareness over the past two semesters. “We hold our philanthropy, Breast Cancer Education and Awareness, very close to our hearts because we want to do everything we can to raise awareness for something that affects everyone, especially women,” says Paizley Coffey, president of Zeta Tau Alpha. Delta Psi partners with Yoplait, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, athletic teams, Think Pink and other partnerships in order to increase awareness and to raise money for research and education.
The Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Mu received the Philomathean Society Award at their convention in San Antonio this July. This is the second year in a row the chapter has won this award. Samford’s Alpha Gamma Chapter raised over $90,000 in two years for their philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Alpha Gamma holds a 5K Miracle Run, a letter-writing campaign and a car wash during the year to raise money for the CMN.
Alpha Delta Pi received the Diamond 4-Point Award for chapter operations. The Diamond 4-Point is a pre-cursor to the bi-annual top chapter honors, “The Golden Lion.” This award is the highest honor an ADPi Chapter can earn. Samford’s Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi has received The Golden Lion Award over fifteen times. The Kappa Chapter also won achievement, scholarship excellence, panhellenic achievement and recruitment excellence awards from the 2012 Leadership Seminar Chapter Awards. Jenna Young, senior and president of Alpha Delta Pi, says, “the Kappa chapter is an award winning chapter because of the hard work of members and predecessors.”
