The Samford baseball team earned a big non-conference series win against Penn State on March 5, improving their record to 8-4.

The Bulldogs fell in the opener Saturday, 7-4.

Senior right-hander Kyle Putkonen made the start. Putkonen pitched five innings giving up five runs on 10 hits and striking out six.

Samford jumped out on top first, plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Zeth Stone singled and advanced to second when sophomore Phillip Ervin walked. Stone scored on a passed ball and after a flyout by senior Brandon Miller, redshirt junior Christian Durdaller doubled home Ervin for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

A Penn St. three-run homer in the top of the third gave the Nittany Lions a 3-2 lead they would never surrender.

Ervin and senior first baseman Saxon Butler had ninth inning RBI’s for the Bulldogs, but that’s all the home side of the scoreboard would see.

Senior Brad Moss led the Bulldogs offensively going 3-for-3, while Butler and Ervin both went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI each. Stone went 2-for-5.

Senior Charles Basford turned in a masterful complete game pitching performance in game two on Sunday as Samford won, 4-1.

Basford fanned eight Nittany Lion hitters, walked none and allowed just six hits.

Sophomore designated hitter C.K. Irby led the ‘Dogs at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Brad Moss was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Sean Deegan drove in the lone run for Penn St. with a first inning double.

Samford then tied the ballgame in the bottom of the sixth inning. Irby singled and was eventually driven home on a Zeth Stone double.

The Bulldogs added three more in the seventh. Irby began the rally with a single, driving in Ervin and senior Brandon Miller. Moss then scored on a Christian Durdaller fielder’s choice.

Samford wrapped up the series in the final contest Monday evening, defeating Penn St. 7-3.

C.K. Irby kept his streaking weekend alive, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, Zeth Stone went 3-for-3, while Phillip Ervin added two hits and an RBI. Brandon Miller hit his seventh home run of the season.

Senior Josh Martin toed the rubber for the Bulldogs, pitching seven innings and giving up two unearned runs on seven hits, while striking out 10.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Samford scored two runs. Stone scored first on a single to left-center field by Saxon Butler, who was then driven in on an Ervin single to center field.

The Bulldogs added three runs to their lead they would never relinquish in the sixth inning. Miller homered to left-center field with one out to extend the lead to 3-2. Irby then singled up the middle to drive in Ervin. Christian Durdaller scored the third run of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Moss.

Samford added one run in the seventh inning and one more in the eight to extend the lead to 7-2.

Sean Deegan would hit an RBI single in the ninth for Penn St. to make the score 7-3.

Samford hosts Jacksonville State at Joe Lee Griffin Field tonight at 6 p.m. CST. They will then hit the road for their first SoCon series this weekend as they take on UNC-Greensboro Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
