In their first SoCon match of the year, the soccer team had a convincing 3-0 victory against the Chattanooga Mocs in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Samford, now 6-5 this season and 1-0 in the conference, asserted their dominance early with a goal in the fourth minute over Chattanooga, who is 1-8 this season and 0-1 in the SoCon.

Freshman and undeclared major Virginia McNeill provided an assist for a header goal on what looked like a broken play from sophomore sports administration major Malcanisha Kelley. The goal would be Kelley’s first of the match and her 12th of the season.

Dale Rutemeyer - Chattanooga Athletics CommunicationsIn the opening minutes of the second half, the Bulldogs struck again as sophomore exercise science major Taylor Borman set up senior exercise science major Ariane Lukens for a goal to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.

However, the Bulldogs were not done yet. Sixty minutes into the match, the Bulldogs extended their lead to ensure themselves a victory. Minutes after being subbed into the game, sophomore marketing major Jermaine Seoposenwe connected with Kelley for her second goal of the match to put the team up 3-0.

Thanks to the strong play of freshman keeper and undeclared major Anna Maddox and the Bulldog defense, the Mocs were not able to find the back of the net.

“So far this season, we’ve given up more goals than we would have liked, so to get a shutout today was a big confidence-booster for us. I also think it was important for Anna to have a good game and it should also give her some confidence as we continue in our conference season,” Head Coach Tom Yelton said.

Furthermore, Yelton acknowledged the importance of racking up conference wins early.

‘It’s always good to start conference play with a win, especially when you’re playing on the road,’ Yelton said.

The Bulldogs will need to maintain this confidence as they return home for two key games against SoCon rivals Eastern Tennessee State and Western Carolina.
