Checking in on Samford’s pros

Over the years, Samford Athletics has produced several athletes who have been drafted by professional sports organizations. Below are the athletes that are currently playing for a professional sports team, along with who they are playing for.


Cortland Finnegan – Finnegan was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He was selected for the pro bowl in 2009. Finnegan was signed by the Carolina Panthers on Monday.

Jaquiski Tartt – Tartt was drafted in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He currently has 35 tackles and one sack for one season.

Nick Williams – Williams joined the Kansas City Chiefs this season, after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams has four tackles this season.


Saxon Bulter – Butler is currently playing for the Tampa Yankees, the Class A-Advanced team of the New York Yankees. He was drafted in round 33 of the 2012 draft by the New York Yankees.

Phillip Ervin – Ervin is a centerfielder for the double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos. He was drafted in the first round of the 2013 draft by the Cincinnati Reds, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ parent club.

Tyler Filliben – Filliben was drafted in the twelfth round in 2014 by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is playing for the West Virginia Power, the Pirates’ Class A team.

C.K. Irby – Irby plays in the Rookie league for the Elizabethton Twins. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 2013 draft in the tenth round.

Josh Martin – Martin is a pitcher for the Akron RubberDucks. The RubberDucks are the Double-A team of the Cleveland Indians who drafted Martin in the tenth round of 2012 draft.

Tripp Martin – The Texas Rangers drafted Martin in round 22 of the 2014 draft. He currently plays for their Class A-Adavanced team, the High Desert Mavericks.

Brandon Miller – Miller was drafted in the fourth round of the 2012 draft by the Washington Nationals. He is playing for the Potomac Nationals, the Washington Nationals’ Class A-Advanced team.

Grant Sides – Sides is a pitcher for the Lynchburg Hillcats, the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. The Indians drafted Sides in the twelfth round of the 2011 draft.
