The Samford women’s basketball team split the final two home games of the season. The Bulldogs lost 58-38 to Davidson Saturday before defeating Western Carolina 47-41 Monday.

Saturday was senior day for the Samford women’s basketball team. nursing major Hannah Dawson and family studies major Jazmine Martin were honored for all their hard work over the last four years before the game.

Martin led Samford in scoring in 2012-13, with 12.3 points per game as of Feb. 27. Dawson averaged 7.3 rebounds per game to lead the Bulldogs.

“It’s starting to get a little emotional knowing that this is it,” Dawson said. “I love this program, it’s been the best four years of my life and I couldn’t picture myself anywhere else.”

Saturday the Bulldogs fell behind in the first half against Davidson, the second-best team in the SoCon.

“We put ourselves in a hole early,” head coach Mike Morris said. “Obviously Davidson is a very good team. They’re good and they did a good job today.”

Dawson, who made 10 points and 14 rebounds, led the Bulldogs statistically.

Other leading scorers for the Bulldogs were Martin with eight points and six rebounds, and freshman exercise science major Ashli Mayes with six points and four rebounds.

The first points of the game were from the Wildcats at 18:37 with a layup by Dakota Dukes. The Wildcats seemed to have control of the ball for the whole game because after that they continued out to an 8-1 lead five minutes into the game.

The Bulldogs got as close as two points in the first half, as a jumper by Mayes at 10:14 put the score at 11-9.

After the shot from Mayes, the Wildcats took control and went on a 9-0 run before the Bulldogs scored again. A three-pointer by junior Kendall Schwantz at 5:42 made the score 20-12.

The Wildcats got their biggest lead of the half at 12 points with 27 seconds left on the clock. A jumper by Martin with nine seconds to go put the halftime score at 28-18.

Opening up the second half, the Bulldogs got the first points with a jumper by Stricklin at 18:37 putting the score at 28-20. The largest lead of the night for the Wildcats came at 15 seconds left in the game, when a jumper by Alex Long put the ending score at 58-38.

The Bulldogs responded Monday to win their last home game of the season 47-41 against Western Carolina.

“What has been consistent over the last 10 or 12 games we’ve played is that Jazmine and Hannah have really upped their production,” Morris said. “Those two seniors are really playing the best basketball they’ve played in their careers down the stretch.”

Martin was the Bulldogs’ leading scorer with 19 points. Dawson was the leading rebounder with eight rebounds. She added 11 points in her final home effort as a Bulldog.

The Bulldogs got a 7-0 run within the first four minutes of the game. The Bulldogs had their biggest lead of the first half at 1:38 to go with a Martin free throw putting the score at 25-17.

A Martin layup with 28 seconds left made the halftime score 27-19.

The Bulldogs worked their lead out to 38-21 with a free throw by sophomore nursing major Taylor Reece with 14:58 to play.

The Catamounts started fighting back to eventually tie the game at 38. Dawson ended an 11:29 scoring drought with a layup to put the Bulldogs back up 40-38.

Dawson came away with a huge three with 1:27 left to make the score 46-41, which put the game out of reach for Western Carolina.

“I was disappointed that we gave up a 17-point lead, but we found a way to win the game,” Morris said. “Hannah scored down low and she made a three at the end of the shot clock that was big. You just need some breaks every now and then and we got a few tonight.”

The Bulldogs will close out their regular season with a road trip to Appalachian State Monday, March 4.
