The football team barely beat the Citadel 20-17 after two fourth-quarter touchdowns last Saturday.

“Our kids did a great job in all three phases of the game. This was a hard-fought football game that went down to the last play and we came out on top, so it was a great victory,” Assistant Head Coach Bill D’Ottavio said.

Both teams came into the 4th quarter tied 7-7, but with 1 minute and 57 seconds left in the 4th quarter, the Samford Bulldogs trailed the Citadel Bulldogs, 17-13.

Samford, led by redshirt junior quarterback, communication studies major and leading passer Michael Eubank, put together a drive that was almost ended short, on 4th down. Sophomore wide receiver and undeclared major Karel Hamilton had an unbelievable 28-yard reception.

Redshirt senior wide receiver and business major Robert Clark also had a 26-yard reception to set up the game winning rushing touchdown of sophomore running back and sports administration major Denzel Williams. Williams’ score capped a nine-play, 72-yard game-winning drive that took a minute and 35 seconds.

Eubank led the passing attack; he was 18 of 28 with 228 yards and a touchdown. Hamilton caught 5 passes for 71 yards. Junior halfback and public administration major Tony Philpot caught 4 passes with 1 touchdown.

Williams led the rushing attack; he ran the ball 19 times for 88 yards and one touchdown. Williams extends his impressive streak, and now has a rushing touchdown in all 10 Samford’s games this year.

The Citadels’ quarterback Aaron Miller rushed 20 times for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Defensive back Walker Smith led their defense with 11 tackles and 8 solo stops.

The win marks the fourth-straight victory for Samford. The Bulldogs have now posted four-straight winning seasons and three-straight seven-win seasons. The team’s record is now 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the SoCon.

Next the Bulldogs will travel to Auburn this Saturday Nov. 22. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff from Jordan-Hare Stadium, and it will be televised live on ESPNU.
