This year’s homecoming court members consist of queen candidates Jordyn Elrod, Elizabeth Gettys, and Meredith Edney and king candidates Jeremy Towns, Matt Wambles, and John Woods.

Jordyn Elrod is a secondary education/language arts major from Franklin, Tenn. She is the founder and president of the Women’s Club Lacrosse team, member of the University Ministries Arts and Media committee, and a member of the Student Leadership at Shades Mountain Baptist Church. She loves adventure and travel, boasting visits to 14 different countries including England where she spent a semester abroad studying in London. Looking back on her four years here at Samford, she says she is nothing but grateful.

“I am so blessed to have the privilege of representing Samford as a member of homecoming court! Elrod said. “I feel loved and supported by my amazing friends and cannot wait to celebrate homecoming with them.”

Elizabeth Gettys is an economics major with a concentration in social entrepreneurship from Alexander City, Ala. She is a member of Samford University Ambassadors, PAC, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, University Ministries and Step Sing Committee 2012. Her sister, Emily Gettys was crowned Homecoming Queen at Samford in 2008, so she acknowledges what a great honor it is to even be nominated. As far as this weekend’s events, she is excited to spend it with her fellow members of the court.

“Let’s be real, parades are awkward,” Gettys said. “But I’m glad I get to endure it with you all.”

Meredith Edney is a elementary education major from Vicksburg, Miss. She is a member of the student recruitment team, Kappa Delta Pi, Campus Outreach and a Connections leader. She is also a sister of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

“I am pumped to be on the field with all the other members on homecoming court.” Edney said. “I feel so blessed to get to stand next to the other representatives and can’t wait for a fun weekend together.”

Jeremy Towns is a sports medicine major from Dolomite, Ala. He is involved with R.A.N.S.O.M., Brothers of One Voice, and is a defensive tackle for the Samford Football team.

Matt Wambles is a journalism and mass communications major from Dothan, Ala. He is involved with Campus Outreach and is the co-director of Dudes-A-Plenty for Step Sing 2012. He is excited to represent the senior class with the rest of the nominees.

“Just being grouped with the other people is enough to make me thankful because they are solid people,” Wambles said. “They deserve to be on court more than I do.”

John Woods is an economics major from Louisville, Ky. He is a member of the Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity as well as a member of the Samford Club Lacrosse team.

“I’ve got a ton of respect for JT and Matt, two guys I legitimately look up to a ton and who I owe a lot to. They probably have no clue how much I respect them both,” Woods said. “As cliché as it sounds, I also can’t speak highly enough about Jordyn, Elizabeth and Meredith.”

The 2011 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned on Saturday during Samford’s home football game against Western Carolina, which kicks off at 2 p.m. CDT
