Samford’s Women’s Soccer team has had a tough stretch of games lately.  Overall, it has compiled a record of 2-5-1. They have played matches against extremely formidable opponents such as the likes of Memphis, Alabama, Florida State and Michigan State. It was no different when the Bulldogs matched up against the University of Georgia Bulldogs at home Sept. 8.

The game looked to be a great contest, as both teams came in looking for a victory. UGA got off to a quick start as junior midfielder Sydney Shultis scored a goal just under 11 minutes into the match. After that goal, both teams played strong defensively and neither team was able to mount anything significant on the offensive attack for much of the rest of the match.

Then, in the 85’, Samford equalized the score at 1-1, as sophomore forward Erin Bonner was able to put the ball in the back of the net after her first shot was deflected off of both Georgia’s goalkeeper and a Georgia defender. The goal came off of a corner kick that proved to be the deciding factor in the match.

“I love to be on the field when we have corner kicks,” Bonner said. “Every time I am in on one, I always tell myself to get to the ball first and that is what I was doing on that corner kick.”

Bonner’s first goal of the season ended up being the goal that gave Samford its fifth draw of the season against a very tough opponent.

“It honestly was the best feeling that I have felt since being on the team,” Bonner said. “My teammates were so uplifting and ran up to me to congratulate me, on and off the field. I am so thankful for each and every one of them.”

Bonner and the rest of the Samford Women’s Soccer team look to build on this momentum as they begin a difficult series of away matches next week before they eventually begin conference play on Sept. 22 on the road at Western Carolina.
