Men’s tennis blanks The Citadel

The men’s tennis team won its last regular season SoCon match on Saturday afternoon, beating The Citadel 7-0.

Samford started the match by winning the doubles point, putting them ahead 1-0.

The doubles pairing of senior Austin Akers and freshman Austin Heinz won 8-2 on court No. 2, and the duo of junior Fares Kilani and freshman Justin Ghavami won 8-3 on court No. 3.

On court No. 1, the doubles team of junior Trey Carter and freshman Jake Faundez lost by one point to Citadel’s Artemie Amari and Peter Bleach 8-7.

In singles, Samford won in straight sets in all but one match. Ghavami took his match to three sets and held off The Citadel’s Jackson Pride, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Samford ended its regular season 3-4 in SoCon play and 9-10 overall. The team will travel to Greenville, South Carolina, this weekend to compete in the SoCon Championship tournament, which will be co-hosted by Furman and Wofford. The men enter as the No. 4 seed and are slated to face fifth-seeded UNC-Greensboro at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) on Friday.
