The Samford tennis teams will compete in the Southern Conference tournament this weekend in Greenville, S.C. The men’s team finished the regular season with a record of 7-11, with a 3-4 record in SoCon matchups. It is ranked sixth overall in the conference.

The Bulldogs ride a three-game win streak into the tournament. They’ve beaten three straight SoCon opponents – UNCG 4-3, Chattanooga 4-3 and The Citadel 7-0. Their last loss came almost two weeks ago to their upcoming opponent in the first round of the SoCon tournament, Mercer.

The Bears enter the SoCon tournament ranked third in the conference after finishing the regular season 5-2 in SoCon play. During their regular season matchup on April 8, Mercer defeated Samford 5-2.

Justin Ghavami and Jake Faundez are leading singles for the Bulldogs this season and are looking to make their mark at the conference tournament. Faundez is 5-2 in the SoCon this season and has won four straight matches. Ghavami received the SoCon Player of the Week award on Tuesday after he was a perfect 4-0 in competition last week.

Ghavami said that he and his team are ready to face Mercer again in the postseason to see if they can flip the results.

“We’re really excited to play Mercer again and to see how we match up against them our second time around,” Ghavami said. “A lot of the guys on the team didn’t play that well when we faced them in the regular season. I’m really excited to see how we fair against them this time around.”

The women’s team, on the other hand, finished the season with a 12-9 record and a 4-3 conference record. They enter the SoCon tournament as the four seed. They’ve won their last four games, including their final game against Chattanooga, who they’ll face again in the first round of the conference tournament.

The women’s team will begin tournament play on Friday, April 21, at 9:30 a.m., while the men’s tournament will start on Friday at noon.
