Construction is coming to a head for the new baseball and softball facility, which will be situated between the two teams’ fields. Former coach John T. Haywood, Jr., is to be honored with the naming of the building.
Although the project started just this August, planning and fundraising have been underway since 2005. The facility is being entirely sustained by private and confidential donations.
This facility will allow the baseball and softball teams to complete their training – formerly at the mercy of inclement weather – year-round. It will also bring the teams’ space up to par with those of other SoCon schools, giving Samford athletes exposure to much-needed quality equipment.
Samford Athletic Director Martin Newton stressed that the fierce SoCon competition was the vital push to get the plans off paper.
“The need to provide [the teams] with a quality facility like the rest of the SoCon so they can complete at the highest level,” Newtwon said.
In addition to the new field house, plans are being made for a large-scale project, contracted by Bradford Building Co. of Birmingham, which will include a new press tower, a concession stand, restrooms and a new softball stadium that will seat 200 fans.
The John T. Haywood Jr. Field House will be completed, open and ready for training this February. The new softball stadium will be reoriented and completed on opening day in March.
