The Bulldogs clinched the SoCon title with a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over the Mercer Bears at home.
Samford now has a 12-7 record and is 7-2 in the SoCon as it moves on to the first round of the SoCon tournament this Saturday.
A mere 4 minutes into the game, senior finance major Amanda Abbott skillfully side-stepped the Bear’s keeper and buried a shot into the back of the net. The assist belonged to sophomore marketing major Jermaine Seoposenwe. The savvy goal gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead, a lead they would relentlessly hold for the remaining 86 minutes.
With 21.3 seconds remaining in the game, the Bears had one last opportunity to tie the Bulldogs. However, the Bear’s chance was squandered as the Bulldog’s defense and freshman keeper and undeclared major Anna Maddox kept their composure until the final seconds ticked off the clock.
The fans joined the team for celebration on the field but the last 21.3 seconds of the game were replayed due to mismanagement of the game clock. The confused fans returned to the stands as the Bulldogs retook the field. Once again, the Bears were denied and the Bulldogs resumed the celebration at midfield.
“This was an incredible, hard-fought win, Mercer came in here undefeated today and we knew they were going to be really hard to score against. We knew that it would be a one or two-goal game at the most. We scored a quick goal early and I was very proud of our backs and Anna Maddox for holding down the fort,” senior defender and mathematics major Katie Danehy said.
The Bulldogs will resume play next Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Samford Track and Soccer Complex against VMI or the Citadel.
