The Samford Bulldogs proved they were deserved the number one seed in the SoCon Tournament after a 6-0 victory against the Citadel. The Bulldogs will get the chance to improve their 13-7 and 8-2 record as they advance to the next round of the SoCon tournament.
The first goal came off the foot of sophomore business major Anna Allen. The 15th minute goal was the first of the season for the Birmingham native. Allen’s early goal stood uncontested for first half of the game.
The Bulldogs came out of the half firing as senior mathematics major Katie Danehy and sophomore marketing major Jermaine Seoposenwe quickly netted goals for a controlling 3-0 lead.
The fireworks continued as the Bulldogs would go on to record three more goals. Sophomore nutrition major Heather Lacy took advantage of a magnificent cross from sophomore sports administration major Malcanisha Kelley. Junior exercise science major Kinsey Sessions stuck next for her first goal of the year. Finally, sophomore exercise science major Sara Smelter’s nifty header concluded the match.
Even with the impressive offensive performance by the Bulldogs, Head Coach Todd Yelton did not overlook the play of his unyielding defense.
“I have to give full credit to our defense tonight, I’m pretty sure that there have only been two teams to shut The Citadel out all year. Vanessa Aponte is an outstanding attacking player for them and they really play some great soccer. Tonight just happened to be our night and our team played outstanding,” said Yelton.
The Bulldog’s next game will be on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Cullowhee, North Carolina against ETSU.
