The Samford softball team played host to the UNC-Greensboro Spartans this weekend and lost two of the three game series. After the series, the Bulldogs post an overall record of 9-27 and a conference record of 3-9. UNCG now sits at 14-22 on the season, and 6-6 in SoCon play.

The lead changed three times in the first game. UNCG took the lead first with a two-run home run in the second inning after a Bulldog error allowed a runner on first. In the fourth inning, as the Spartans threatened to gain two more runs, freshman shortstop Abby Adams snagged a line drive with a diving catch towards second. She landed with her glove on the base, which got the runner out, ending the inning with a one-man double play.

Samford pulled ahead 3-2 in the fifth inning, but UNCG responded with three runs in the sixth to make the score 5-3, the final of the game.

Despite the tough loss in the first game, the Bulldogs rallied and won the second game of the series with a final score of 2-1. Freshman pitcher Shelby Scott earned the win, giving up only one run off of four hits.

After three scoreless innings, the Bulldogs earned a run off of a double to right center from freshman Rachel Bickert to bring Scott around to make the score 1-0. Samford scored another run off of a Spartan error to widen the gap to 2-0.

UNCG tried to come back with a solo homerun in the seventh inning, but the Bulldogs held them to maintain the lead and earn the win with a final score of 2-1.

In the final game of the series, Samford lost in a high-scoring contest with a final of 13-8. In the top of the second, after a UNCG single, Samford pitching loaded the bases with two hit batters with one out. A pop fly to second base earned out two, but a wild pitch allowed a Spartan score. A walk filled up the bases again, and a Spartan single earned two more runs for UNCG, making the score 3-0. Samford cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second with an RBI from freshman Caroline Seay.

The Spartan offense sparked in the third scoring eight runs in the inning, including four off of a grand slam. This widened the gap to 11-1. The Bulldogs earned a run in the bottom of the third and rallied in the fourth, scoring five runs to narrow the UNCG lead to four with a score of 11-7.

The Spartans scored again in the fifth to increase their lead to 13-7. The Bulldogs were not through fighting, however. A single in the bottom of the fifth allowed Bickert to score, making the score 13-8. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs could not pull it out, and the Spartans took the game and the series with a final score of 13-8.

The Bulldogs look to play April 5 at home against Middle Tennessee State University in a double header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 CST.
