Samford’s student affairs team is in transition after announcing changes to staff positions April 3.
Lauren Taylor has been named the Assistant Vice President for Campus and Residential Life.
Matt Kerlin was appointed the Assistant Vice President for Student Development and Garry Atkins was promoted to the position of Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Title IX Coordinator.
According to an email from Phil Kimrey, Taylor will manage the Offices of Student Activities and Events and Campus Recreation in addition to the Offices of Residence Life and University Services. Atkins will “have responsibilities related to other compliance areas for the campus and will enhance his work with the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Initiatives.” Atkins will no longer serve as Samford’s disciplinarian; that responsibility will now be shouldered by Kerlin, who manages the Offices of Counseling Services, Student Leadership and Involvement and Values Advocacy as well as the Office of Spiritual Life.
Kerlin said that the changes are primarily due to personnel changes within the Student Affairs team, but that the reallocated responsibilities “make sense.”
“I think it makes sense to group certain things together that allow people to work collaboratively in support in the university’s mission,” Kerlin said. “I do a lot with (the Offices of Counseling Services, Student Leadership and Involvement and Values Advocacy) already.”
The changes in title are effective immediately. However, the transition in responsibilities will take place gradually between now and the beginning of the fall semester as Taylor, Kimrey and Atkins become acclimated to their new responsibilities.
