The Bulldogs swept all three games against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Friday, winning the first game 25-10, the second 25-17 and the third 25-18.

The Mocs set up a good defense, but the Bulldogs kept throwing back at them. Junior middle blocker and exercise major Katie Murphy said even when UTC made a kill or block, the Bulldogs came right back and fought for every point.

“We’re very hard to stop when we’re in that mentality,” Murphy said.

Senior libero and sport administration major Alexis Bauer was a key player during the match. She did a great job of controlling the ball and had a level head.

“Everything starts with her,” Murphy said. “She really gets us going.”

Lauren Hutchinson, a senior sport administration major and middle blocker, made 16 kills and only one error. All of Hutchinson’s 16 kills came from assists from senior setter Casey Garvey; Murphy made 10 kills and zero errors during the match.

“Those 26 kills are more than half of the offensive output of our entire team tonight,” head coach Dex Schroeder said.

The Bulldogs had specific goals set for the match against UTC and they attained those goals. Schroeder said the team was focused and determined to create an aggressive environment on the Samford side of the net as well as run the ball through the middle.

“We knew that they were going to create a very competitive environment on their side of the net, so we wanted to match that on our side,” Schroeder said. “We wanted to get the ball set into the middle of the court.”

Following a five set home victory over Furman, the Bulldogs (12-6, 4-0 SoCon) play their next match on Friday, Oct. 5 against the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.
