Golden Globes 2023 nominees, controversies: What to know

Hollywood will start out the 2023 awards season with the 80th Golden Globes on Tuesday. 

The star-studded event is returning for the first time since 2021 after a controversy involving the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). 

At the time, the HFPA came under fire after a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed ethical lapses and a stunning lack of diversity — there was not a single Black journalist in the 87-person group. Studios and PR firms threatened to boycott. Tom Cruise even returned his three Golden Globes, while other A-listers condemned the group on social media.

Since being engulfed by backlash, the group reformed, reorganized and are set to air its first live broadcast since the controversy. The group has added a chief diversity officer; overhauled its board; inducted 21 new members, including six Black journalists; brought in the NAACP on a five-year partnership; and updated its code of conduct.

Here’s what to know about the award show: 

How can I watch?

The Golden Globes will air on NBC and stream on Peacock Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. 

Last year, awards were announced without any stars present and no broadcasted ceremony. 

Who is hosting?

Comedian Jerrod Carmichael, who is known for the 2014 movie “Neighbors,” the NBC series “The Carmichael Show” and his HBO stand-up special “Rothaniel,” will be hosting for the first time this year.

“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” Helen Hoehne, president of the HFPA, said in a statement late last year. 

“His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live. Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

The show’s last broadcast saw Ricky Gervais, who hosted the show five times, at the helm. Gervais has said he does not plan on taking the gig again. 

“F— that,” he tweeted in October when a fan suggested he should take the mic again.

Who is presenting?

Following the boycott last year, Hollywood stars are set to take the stage at the Beverly Hilton again to hand out and receive some hardware. 

Last week, HFPA announced Jamie Lee Curtis, Billy Porter, Ana de Armas, Nicole Byer, Quentin Tarantino and Tracy Morgan would be among the stars presenting. 

Colman Domingo, Natasha Lyonne, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Niecy Nash-Betts and Ana Gasteyer will also be presenting awards. 

Who are the nominees?

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Elvis,” “The Fabelmans,” “Tár” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are all up for best picture (drama) this year, with “Babylon,” “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and “Triangle of Sadness” up for best picture (musical/comedy). 

The nominees for best limited series, anthology series or television motion picture are “The White Lotus,” “Pam & Tommy,” “The Dropout,” “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Black Bird.”

Other nominees in various categories include Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez for “Only Murders in the Building,” Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga for best song, Armas for “Blonde,” Viola Davis for “The Woman King,” Margot Robbie for “Babylon” and Daniel Craig for “Glass Onion.”

Eddie Murphy will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Eddie Murphy will also receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award and “American Horror Story” and “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy will accept the Carol Burnett Award, which was first presented to Burnett herself in 2019. 

The Golden Globes will air two months ahead of the Oscars, which is scheduled for March 12.
